{"id":329,"date":"2014-08-12T20:48:24","date_gmt":"2014-08-13T03:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.popartsplace.net\/now\/?p=329"},"modified":"2014-08-12T20:48:24","modified_gmt":"2014-08-13T03:48:24","slug":"pride-true-story-from-1984","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.popartsplace.net\/now\/2014\/08\/12\/pride-true-story-from-1984\/","title":{"rendered":"Pride &#8211; based on a true story from 1984"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LoDhhLgobt4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There are times when we can look to our past, recent or distant, and learn a lesson. \u00a0Those who came before us can set an example, be it good or bad.<\/p>\n<p>One look at the trailer for the movie <em>Pride,<\/em> about a town\u00a0realizing how much you can discover about people when you take the time to get to know them, instead of fearing and hating based on assumptions, makes me think this could be one of the most unexpectedly powerful movies of the year. \u00a0Perhaps it will open some eyes, and heart. \u00a0Three decades later this union could once again make things better for total strangers.<\/p>\n<p>What a concept.<\/p>\n<p>The film&#8217;s description is really quite simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>PRIDE<\/em> is inspired by an extraordinary true story.\u00a0 It\u2019s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers\u2019 families.\u00a0 Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.\u00a0 As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Directed by Tony Award\u00ae-winner Matthew Warchus (<em>God of Carnage<\/em>) from a screenplay by Stephen Beresford<\/p>\n<p>Starring Bill Nighy (<em>The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel<\/em>), Imelda Staunton (<em>Maleficent<\/em>), Dominic West (<em>The Hour<\/em>), Paddy Considine (<em>Submarine<\/em>), Andrew Scott (<em>Sherlock<\/em>), Joseph Gilgun (<em>Lockout<\/em>), George MacKay (<em>How I Live Now<\/em>) and Ben Schnetzer (<em>Warcraft<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Pride Official Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsfilms.com\/pride\/\">Pride<\/a> will be in Theaters September 19, 2014<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are times when we can look to our past, recent or distant, and learn a lesson. \u00a0Those who came before us can set an example, be it good or bad.
