Plant a Tree for Groot

You may have heard that James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, nominated Vin Diesel for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.  In his video, before taking the challenge, Vin shook a tree he had just planted and challenged James Gunn to also “Plant a Tree for Groot.”

Not long after the video was posted, Vin Diesel followed it up with this photo on his facebook page of him planting his own tree for Groot.

For those interested in planting for Groot, consider growing a tree from a cutting (take a tour around google for more information) you can frequently get a cutting for free from someone with the appropriate type of tree, and with a little time and effort on your part a beautiful tree can be grown.  (And for those who have already seen the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, let’s just say I think Groot would approve of the cuttings approach to planting a tree for Groot.)

I was five people from the end of the line for the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. autograph session.  That autograph signing was, by far, one of my San Diego Comic-Con International highlights for 2014, and I am not just saying that because each of the kind ladies in the cast gave me a high-five (as did Jeph Loeb.)

By rights the cast could have been tired, and noticing that their session was about to end. They could have been shifting their focus to the fact they were about to move on to whatever came next, especially since it was approaching lunch time and often these events are so tightly scheduled for talent that they have a hard time finding a chance to sit down for a meal.

If the cast was feeling any of those things, you wouldn’t have guessed it to meet them and talk to them.  They gave every person who came through a bright smile, their full attention, and from first person to last made having stood in line for that moment of their time a highlight of San Diego’s Comic-Con International.  When you were in front of them you had no doubt that every ounce of their attention was devoted to you, and thanking you for tuning in every week to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But when they were done with the line they did not simply get up and walk away, instead they came down the few steps to where the crowd waited, and signed autographs for fans in wheel chairs.

Ask me to describe the cast of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Class Act comes to mind.

(And for those who love the Marvel Universe, I just have to mention, the Winter Soldier was the last person in line!)

SD CCI – No shortage of things to do

When it comes to the 2014 Comic-Con International in San Diego there is, simply put, no shortage of things to do.  Thousands of possibilities compete for an attendees attention over the course of 4.5 fun packed days.  And the days are packed, from early in the mornings until late at night, and for those who do not need sleep, opportunities can be found around the clock.

I for one do need sleep, and can honestly say I will not be reporting on the 2 am lines, or middle of the night movies, but in past years I have heard fantastic stories of fans camping out for a beloved show and being surprised by a promotion team stopping by to give them a back pack with a logo for a show they happened to be in to, that was stuffed full of survival rations – granola bars, bottles of waters, everything a die hard fan needs to get through the wee hours until he lines starts moving and the exhibit hall and main panel rooms re-open.

A short run down of things I found during preview night:

BBC America greenscreens fans into a photo of the clones from Orphan Black!  Yes, you could be Cosima, and Rachel, and Allison, and Sara, and Helena — all at once, side by side.

Orphan Black - to cover even half of Comic-Con, I need to be Cloned!

Marvel greenscreens fans into the prisoner line up from Guardians of the Galaxy.  (Looked to be the same one I mentioned from Capital City Comic Con — and yes, I still think that is a highlight and a stop that should be on the list of any fan of the Comic/Movie.)

Starz has a Castle where you can draw an Outlander prize (shot glass, bandanna, t-shirt, tote bag — from what I saw everyone wins!), and equally interesting, and fun, step inside the castle and take a look around at life from centuries ago.

ABC has a large building as well where you can go in and watch a trailer, and while the line was long enough I did not get a chance to go through tonight, my understanding is you draw a pin from a box at the end, and if you get a complete set of the pins, you could win a chance to go through an autograph line with stars from the cast of 1 of 3 shows.  (Once Upon A Time and Resurrection were mentioned.)

Veronica Mars and Outlander fans will want to go looking for the book publishers!  Random House had some nice Outlander Posters for the Starz show, as well as copies of the novel that started it all, tonight, and across the way I found this clever little promo item for Veronica Mars.

And over at the Marvel booth, Lola from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was on display on the main stage… though Lola will only be posing for photos through Friday evening.

At the Capital City Comic Con Kay Kellam was green screened into the Guardians of the Galaxy prisoner line-up.   As fun little things to do at a convention go, this one was nice.  The line was short, the experience fun, a digital copy could be e-mailed to you or posted to your facebook wall, and they offered you a printed copy as well.
