Z Nation – on SyFy and Space

In Z Nation, three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America. Z Nation stars Harold Perrineau (“Oz,” “Lost”) Tom Everett Scott (“Southland,” “Beauty and the Beast”), DJ Qualls (“Supernatural” “Memphis Beat”, “Perception”), Michael Welch (“Twilight” trilogy), Kellita Smith (“The Bernie Mac Show”) Anastasia Baranova (“The Darkness II”), Russell Hodgkinson (“Big Fish”) and Keith Allan (“Rise of the Zombies”).

One of the Space panels I enjoyed greatly at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto was the Z Nation panel with actor Tom Everett Scott and writer/producer Craig Engler.

The panel included a brief trailer for the show, which was more graphic than most shows I tune into.  As tempted as I have been to try watching the Walking Dead, for instance, zombies and gore are not in my wheelhouse, but listening to them talk about the show, I found myself wanting to tune in, even if I do spend portions of the episodes covering my eyes.

This is planned to be a show about travelling across the country, and by the sounds of it, they will not have a slow plodding journey.  They described a plot intensive show, with well thought out details for the Zombies, the virus that creates the Zombies, how the Zombies exist, and how those who are not Zombies are surviving in this new world.  In short, by the end of the panel someone who does not normally watch this genre of show but had come out of curiosity was ready to tune in.

As an added bit of fun, one of the characters, Citizen Z, has a twitter account up and running, and among other things he is giving advice (and taking advice) for surviving the Zombie Apocalypse.  You can tweet with @CitizenZNation.  Citizen Z is alone, in the arctic, with enough food to feed a hundred people for a year, and plenty of power, and access to satellites, giving him a global perspective on the Apocalypse… but who does he have to talk to??

Fan Expo Canada – Toronto – Showcase Booth Poster

Showcase Fan Expo Poster

Showcase Fan Expo Poster

This poster at the Showcase booth at Fan Expo is an eye-catcher, to the point I wish they were offering it as a give-away!  WOW!  And once again, in one image no less, they remind me why I wish I had showcase as a channel I received.  Talk about one channel having show after show I love to watch.

Today I enjoyed seeing friends greenscreened into a trailer for the show Outlander at the Showcase booth, scoping out Lawkeeper Nolans’ car from Defiance (he’s got nice wheels) and checked out displays with props from Haven, Beauty and the Beast, and Outlander.

Among other highlights of our day was the Edward James Olmos panel, where he answered questions about Battlestar Gallactica, and other tv shows and movies he has been a part of, but the audience also asked him about projects that he openly admitted he did not expect to be asked about, but appreciated our interest in.  His work for the environment, and with Public Broadcasting, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (PBS) in the United States.  The panel alternated between moments of laughter that filled the entire theater, to very serious moments in which he discussed the entire cast of Battlestar Gallactica being invited to address the United Nations.

Fan Expo Canada in Toronto – A Week Away

With Fan Expo Canada just a week away it is time, as an attendee, to start not just anticipating, but getting ready, and that means hitting the website and rejoicing that the schedule is up!  The floorplan is up!  And something called a locations guide is up!  Yup, time to download some documents and see just what kind of fun awaits us!

A quick glance at the floor plan for the exhibit hall reveals Showcase, Space and eOne (BroadChurch, Rookie Blue, and Haven, among other projects) will have good size booths — and that right there is one of the major reasons why I have decided to venture to Toronto and check out this convention.

Space is, from what I have gathered, the Canadian equivalent to SyFy in the United States, airing Face Off, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge, as well as Doctor Who, Orphan Black, Sharknado, Wizard Wars, and The Last Ship.

Showcase, based on my limited exposure to it on a trip to Canada is a television channel I would have to have if I lived up north.  I tuned into it at my hotel and fell in love!  The Showcase Channel currently airs Continuum, Defiance, Outlander, Dominion, Haven (made by eOne),  Rizzoli and Isles, Beauty and the Beast, Helix and Game of Thrones, just to name a few shows currently featured on their home page.  To say Showcase airs the shows I watch and love might actually be an understatement.
